Trans-Caspian Fiber Optic Cable Project

Project Description:

The Trans-Caspian Fiber Optic Cable Project is a strategic infrastructure initiative aimed at constructing a 380 km submarine fiber-optic cable line across the Caspian Sea, connecting Sumgait in Azerbaijan to Aktau in Kazakhstan. This project is a pivotal component of the broader "Digital Silk Way" initiative, which seeks to establish a high-capacity digital telecommunications corridor linking Europe and Asia through Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. The cable is designed to support data transmission speeds of up to 400 terabits per second, significantly enhancing regional connectivity and digital infrastructure.

Current Status:

As of March 2025, the project has entered its construction phase. AzerTelecom and Kazakhtelecom have finalized the tender process and commenced the first phase of construction. The project is being implemented in multiple stages, including coastal and seabed assessments, design and production of durable cables, and their subsequent transportation and installation.
