Project Description:The Sovereign Wealth Fund "Samruk-Kazyna" JSC is overseeing the development of Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant (NPP) in the Almaty Region. The selected site for the NPP is near the village of Ulken in the Zhambyl District. This initiative aims to diversify Kazakhstan's energy mix, enhance energy security, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by incorporating nuclear energy into the national grid. The project aligns with the country's strategy to meet growing electricity demand and transition to low-carbon energy sources.

Current Status:As of January 2025, Kazakhstan is finalizing agreements for the construction of the NPP. Regional analyses to determine locations for a second NPP are also nearing completion. In October 2024, a national referendum showed that over 70% of participants supported the development of nuclear energy in the country.
