Integration of the Western Zone into Kazakhstan's Unified Power System

Project Description

This large-scale infrastructure project is aimed at connecting Kazakhstan’s currently isolated Western Power Zone to its Unified Power System (UPS). It includes the construction of a 500 kV overhead transmission line (~604 km), the creation of a new substation at Karabatan, and the expansion of the Ulke substation. The integration is expected to enhance the security and reliability of electricity supply and facilitate the growth of renewable energy generation.

Current Status

In December 2024, KEGOC signed loan agreements with EBRD and the Development Bank of Kazakhstan. Contracts were awarded through public tenders in September 2024. Construction began in November 2024.
