Project Name: Mirny Wind Power Project
Project Description: The Mirny Wind Power Project is an onshore wind farm being developed in Kazakhstan's Zhambyl Region. With a planned capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW), the project will feature approximately 140 wind turbines and a 600 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system to ensure a reliable power supply. Once operational, it is expected to generate around 4 terawatt-hours (TWh) of renewable electricity annually, sufficient to meet the needs of one million people. This initiative supports Kazakhstan's goal of increasing the share of renewable energy in its electricity production to 15% by 2030.
Current Status: As of January 2025, the project is in the pre-construction phase. TotalEnergies has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Financial Settlement Center of Renewable Energy, a public entity owned by the Government of Kazakhstan, to sell all the electricity produced by the Mirny project for the supply of the national grid. Construction is slated to begin in the fall of 2025, with commissioning expected in 2028.
Start Date: Construction is scheduled to commence in the fall of 2025.
End Date: The wind farm is expected to be commissioned in 2028.
Investment Volume: approximately $1.4 billion USD.
